On April 21, 46 ETHS student volunteers along with a host of Kiwanians cleaned up several tons of garbage, debris, and recyclables from the streets and parkways leading up to the campus. Junk was also cleaned up from the Railroad Right of Way on the east side of Dodge Ave. This included 4 old tires, old sofas, and an old cast iron sink. Much credit and thanks must be given to Mary Collins of the ETHS staff for helping to organize the student volunteers, who in turn led the cleanup. The students did a terrific job in what we now consider an annual event

For the third year in a row, the Evanston Kiwanis Club will field a team in support of the American Cancer Relay at ETHS on April 21. The Club has already pledged $250 in support of the Relay to fight cancer, with over an additional $100 in individual member support. The Relay begins at 6pm in the ETHS Field House on April 21.
The Evanston Kiwanis Club will partner with ETHS students for an Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday morning, April 21, from 9am to 12pm. This is the third year in a row that the two groups will work side by side in picking up trash and debris from the streets and parkways leading up to the ETHS campus. Its a great way to spend a few hours during Earth week. But you don’t have to be a student or a Kiwanian to join in. Simply stop by the ETHS campus on the Dodge St. side and look for the canopy on the 21st. Its a great way to say we care about this planet and our community in our own small way.

The Evanston Kiwanis Club is returning to High School. The Kiwanis Club will now meet for a breakfast meeting from 7am-8am in the Terrace Room at Evanston Township High School on the third Tuesday of each month. While the Club currently meets at Gio’s restaurant for lunch every Tuesday, the move to an ETHS breakfast monthly meeting will strengthen the already strong ties the Club has with the High School.
“Evanston Kiwanis and ETHS partner on a number of projects already such as the Earth Day Clean up and the “Beat the Streets Wrestling Program” said Kiwanis President Jim Wolinski.
In addition Kiwanis honors three student athletes and three art students on a monthly basis at their noon lunch meetings.
Wolinski further stated that three members of the ETHS staff were Kiwanis members, but because of their duties at the high school, attending lunch meetings off campus was virtually imposssible. The three staff members, Athletic Director Chris Levatino, Wrestling Coach Rudy Salinas, and Head of Security Sam Pettineo now can attend the breakfast meetings and interact with fellow Kiwanians. Plus there is the opportunity for other ETHS staff and faculty to join Kiwanis.
“Its a win/win situation for both the High School and Kiwanis” said Wolinski. “Kiwanis is all about helping children and young people, so we need to be where our client population, their educators, and administrators are.
The next Kiwanisbreakfast meeting at ETHS will be on April 17 at 7am

The Kiwanis Club of Evanston and Evanston Township High are initiating a contest FunvilleKiwanis which will be open to middle and high school students from Evanston. FunvilleKiwanis is based on the premise that innovative, creative ideas that involve something enjoyable or entertaining can engage people in community building and improvement. (Because everyone loves to have FUN!)
The Kiwanis Club will offer two $250 cash awards, one each to a middle and high school student who envisions a new, interactive way of working with and relating to others to change behavior and make our community a better place. The idea can address any topic or need and create change for the better. It must include some element that’s fun for the people it engages.
The middle school prize will be named in honor of Dr. Robert Storm, a 61-year member of the club and a retired veterinarian. The high school prize will bear the name of the late Robert Heiberger, a long time Kiwanian and ETHS graduate who supported many community activities. Both epitomize Kiwanis values of camaraderie and service.
“The contest is open to all middle and high school students living in Evanston, including home school students,” said Dr. Stamata Blanas of the Kiwanis Club. Co-chair Joan Hickman added, “The cooperation and initiative of the teachers and administration has been superlative. We appreciate their efforts and look forward to working with them to engage middle and high school students in FunvilleKiwanis.”
Each entry must include a written explanation accompanied by a visualized of the idea. Entries will be based on creativity, feasibility and adherence to the concept that fun is the bet way to change behavior and build community. The contest will open Feb. 15 and conclude on April 15. Students and parents can access complete details by going to FunvilleKiwanis.com Community members will be able to access the site to see what ‘fun’ projects the students have created. Winners will honored in late spring at a Kiwanis meeting.
